Faith Matters: November 25, 2009

There is a difference between being thankful for something and giving thanks to someone. Many of us are thankful for good food, healthy bodies and loving families but to give thanks to someone is to acknowledge them as the source or giver of the things we are thankful for and that is the purpose of Thanksgiving.

The Bible tells us that every good thing comes from God (James 1:17) and that He expects people to thank Him for His provisions. To take these good things for granted or attribute them to Mother Nature is an insult to our creator. (Romans 1:21)

The Bible says, "The LORD is good to all, and His mercies are over all His works. (Psalm 145:9) And "He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous." (Matthew 5:45)

We teach our children to say, "Thank you" to others as a basic courtesy and try to set a good example before them. The Pilgrims set a good example for our nation when they said, "Thank you" to God for His bountiful supply of food.

We would do well to continue this practice as a nation and as individuals who enjoy so many of His blessings.
