For the third year in a row students from Shasta County schools had the opportunity to participate in the Treats for Trade program, where students turn in their Halloween candy so it can be sent overseas, along with thank you notes, to the soldiers from the students.
The results for the schools were recently announced, and with 207.5 pounds of candy Meadow Lane came in first place. Anderson Heights Elementary placed sixth donating 47 lbs and Verde Vale tied with French Gulch raising 15 lbs of candy for the troops. The final total for candy collected for the troops was 766 lbs.
The class who collected the most candy at each school of the twelve school that participated in the program will be treated to a healthy class party throughout the month of November. Because Meadow Lane was able to collect the most candy in pounds out of the twelve Shasta County schools that participate, all their students will receive prizes.
The Treats for Trade program is a nutrition education-based event sponsored by the Shasta County Office of Education Nutrition Services, Project SHARE After School Programs, and the University of California Cooperative Extension.
The goal of Shasta County Office of Education Nutrition Services and Project SHARE After School Program is to motivate and inspire children through out the county to eat healthy and be physically active every day.
