West Valley's homecoming was held last Friday night against Gridley the final score 47-15.
The night was filled with excitement and big plays. At the end of the first quarter Jake Gibbons caught a pass by quarterback Ronny Hampton making the score 20-0.
Then at the start of the second quarter Tyler Lowe intercepted the ball and ran it down to Gridley's 20-yard line, where Hampton ran the ball into the end zone. Derek Serna made the two-point conversion.
In the middle of the second quarter Zach Miller made it to the end zone bringing the score to 35-0 at the half.
Serna scored the first touchdown in the second half at the beginning of the third quarter. Soon after, Lowe intercepted a pass thrown by Gridley, and dodged tackles down the field to run the ball in for a touchdown.
Gridley was able to score in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to beat the Eagles at home.
"We did good tonight, but we need to work on getting fewer penalties, we had 85 yards worth in the first half," said Rick Rice, an assistant coach for West Valley. "If we get in a tight spot, penalties will cost us the game."
According to Rice, Levi Cox is supposed to be back this week for the game against Corning. Rice says Hampton is more of an option quarterback, but Cox can throw the ball, and the team is blessed to have both of them.
The Eagles will be on the road this week, traveling down to Corning to play their first league game. West Valley is 2-3 for the season.
