Tucker Oaks played longer than normal last week. The wind from the north made club selection difficult at Tucker Oaks, with half the holes running in that direction, but that didn't stop the Lady Cubs,
Tucker Oaks is an open course in terms of obstacles and barriers, it has three par fives for the ladies and plays as a par 37; however, when wind is introduced. the course plays longer than normal.
Whitley Gibson stepped up and shot a season low 64, while Shannon Westmoreland struggled through out the course and walked away with 74.
"Whitley was proud of herself but she recognized that she gave a few strokes away on the 6th and 7th holes," said Seth Longnecker, girls golf coach for Anderson High School. "She is getting closer to her goal of shooting in the 50's."
Putting did not seem to be much of an issue last week, like it has been in the past, since all the girls had a little trouble with the greens that were still healing from being "punched" (airagated) a week earlier.
"The course was in great shape and I was really impressed with the extra effort from the groundskeepers to give us a quality course for competition," said Longnecker. "Shannon on the other hand struggled. She had a great week of practice but couldn't take it with her to the match. It happens to everyone, and she knows that she is a better player than what she showed. I have a funny feeling, she will be extra motivated for our match in Susanville at Diamond Mountain."
WV golfs personal best
The West Valley girl's golf team had a strong showing this week at Tucker Oaks, with all the girls shooting their personal best.
Kendal Vincent had a 54, Hannah Boyle 64, Grace Boyle 66, Carissa Stenzel 67 and Kasey Laughlin 69.
"Grace, Hannah and Kasey are first year golfers and doing very well. Kendal and Carissa are second year golfers and are showing a lot of improvement," said Daina Cowan, West Valley girl's golf coach. "As a whole the girls are having a good time and are starting to show a little more consistency in their games."
According to Cowan golf is a very humbling sport and can be very hard mentally, but she feels the group of girls she is coaching are up to the challenge physically and mentally.
This next week West Valley will be at Diamond Mountain in Susanville.
"It is a good course for the girls to shoot another good golf score. It is another chance for them to qualify for the Sections Tournament, which you have to score a 52 or better, said Cowan.
