WV essay winners honored

WINNERS ALL: Seven of nine award-winners hold their certificates and gift cards after participating in an Americanism essay contest sponsored by AMVETS.

On Tuesday, Sept. 29, at West Valley High School, the AMVETS (American Veterans) handed out awards to nine students who participated in the Americanism Essay Program last spring.

Last year's theme was "What Does An American Veteran Mean To Me?"

First place winners, who won a $250 gift card, were Natalie McAuliffe (junior), Kelsie Doty (senior) and Lucy Saechao (spring 2009 graduate).

Second place winners, who received a $175 gift card, were Merisa Jensen (junior), Josh Williams (senior) and Callie Jones (spring 2009 graduate).

Third place winners, who garnered a $125 gift card, were Kasey Laughlin (junior), Kevin Hand (senior) and Callie Jones (spring 2009 graduate).

Students in grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade are welcome to compete in this year's completion. The theme for 2010 is: "Why Do We Celebrate the Fourth of July?"
