The Shasta County Board of Supervisors on Thursday announced that they have agreed to a 5 percent pay cut out of concern for a looming and unexpected $5.5 million general fund budget deficit.
Supervisors also will seek 5 percent pay cuts from the county's other elected officials, such as the district attorney, sheriff and assessor-recorder, said Larry Lees, county administrator.
Finally, Lees, other department directors and unrepresented employees will forego a 3 percent raise scheduled for January. These workers agreed to a 3.5 percent pay cut earlier this year.
Supervisors had held a closed session with their labor negotiator on Tuesday. It's unclear if they discussed their own salaries during that meeting.
The supervisors' pay cut will save the county about $12,000 next year, Lees said.
Lees could not provide dollar figures Thursday for the overall savings to the county from the foregone raises for department head and the recommended pay cuts for elected officials other than the supervisors.
Meanwhile, managers have asked representatives from the county's seven employee unions to return to the bargaining table to discuss ways to plug the budget gap while minimizing layoffs.
