Living Historians to stage Civil War battles

Living Historians of the Civil War will be in Happy Valley Oct. 16-18 to reenact several battles.

On Friday, Oct. 16, students will be brought out to the battle field adjacent to Olinda Road and near Chestnut Avenue.

During the re-enactment, students will be transported back in time to the 1860s and shown what life was like during the Civil War, organizers said.

The object of seeing the Union and Confederate clothing, sleeping accommodations, cannons blazing and learning lessons from the living historians is to demonstrate how people should remember what happened back then so that a Civil War will never be repeated, organizers said.

The Living Historians come from around the state and go to different reenactments at least once a month in different areas of California to teach about the Civil War.

They dress in period clothing and appear in character, explaining details and teaching about what happened in the northern and southern states.

Two battles will be re-enacted each day, Saturday, Oct. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18. Both days the battles will be held at 11 a.m and 2 p.m. There will also be craft and food booths for patrons to enjoy.

The Happy Valley Civil War Days runs from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $1 for children age 10 or older.

The Civil War Days are sponsored for the second year by the Happy Valley Lions Club and Foundation.
