Cubs win on the road

The wind and rain at the Shasta College pool did not slow the Cub swimmers down on Wednesday, as they swept past Central Valley and Yreka in a tri-dual Northern Athletic League match-up.

The Anderson girls scored 118 points to out-distance Yreka, 101, and CV, 37. The boys defeated CV in a close race, scoring 106 points to Central Valley's 102; Yreka scored 18.

Placing first in their individual races for the girl Cubs were Jaime Vonk (200 free), Allison Lafayette (100 free), and Makayla Taylor (100 back). Katie Telford, Alisha Bigger, Heavyn Creech, and Vonk swam strong to win the 400 free relay.

In the boys competition Anderson's first place finishers included seniors Tyler Spurgeon (50 free), Josh Gibson (100 free), and Nathan Saunders (100 back). Spurgeon, Gibson, and Saunders combined with freshman Brycen McDaniels to place first in the 200 medley relay.

The outstanding swimmer of the day for the Cubs was Creech (junior), who dropped three seconds off her 50 free time and five seconds off her 100 backstroke time.

According to head coach Don Williams, Creech has been one of the most consistently improving swimmers all season.

"It seems like every time she gets in the pool, she swims faster," commented Williams.

For the boys, sophomore Chris Webb showed the most improvement, dropping over ten seconds off his 100 butterfly time.

On October 21, the Anderson swim team will travel to West Valley for the Northern Athletic League Championships.

According to Williams the young Cubs don't expect to figure anywhere close to the depth and experience of West Valley or U-prep in the team standings.

"I am looking for improvement in everyone's times," said Coach Williams. "Taylor, Lafayette, and Gibson already have Section qualifying times and could make a wave or two of their own."
