Eagles tennis defeats Falcons

The Lady Eagles tennis team held their match on Monday due to the weather forecast.

West Valley hosted Central Valley and had some really close matches, which resulted in tiebreaks and two victories for the Eagles.

Taylor Needham lost her first set to Falcon Kay Saelee, 6-7, however, she came back to win the second set, 6-1, to take the match into a tie-break, which she won, 10-4.

Allison Tucker played against Lynda Mathis of Central Valley and she too seemed to struggle in her first set losing, 3-6. Tucker also came back in the second set to win, 7-5, and take her game into a tiebreak. She won the tiebreak, 10-6, and the match.

Eta Ecenbarger seemed to have things under control against opponent Shyla Silva of Central Valley, winning the first set, 6-3. Silva came back to win the second set 5-7. Ecenbarger played hard in her tiebreaker, but was lost, 9-11.

"Weather may have had an effect, but it really wasn't that bad. Two of the girls started slow and finished strong, one girl started strong, and finished poorly," said Tom Wyrick, girls' tennis coach for West Valley.

The team is looking to their next match against Yreka to determine the rest of the season.

According to Wyrick, if the Lady Eagles can defeat Yreka, the following week they would be in the playoffs, however, if they lose then it would be more individual competition.

"My top three have a pretty good shot at making sectionals if they can pull it all together," said Wyrick referencing DeBonnis, Needham, and Tucker.

West Valley went on to win the match against Central Valley, 6-2. The Lady Eagles are 7-4 in the league and 8-7 overall.
