Dr. Ray John, chief executive officer of Haven Humane Society, will offer its spay and neuter clinic for a long-awaited spay and neuter program to address the feral cat overpopulation. The trap/spay/neuter/release program has proven to successful in other parts of the country, John said.
"We're excited about this program and the fact that Dr. Rick Suther, VCA Companion Animal Hospital, and our own veterinarian, Dr. Cyanna Brauning, have volunteered their services to address a huge issue in our area," John said.
"Thanks to Dr. Suther and a monetary donation from the Northern California Veterinary Medical Association, this program is a reality," he added.
Other veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians have also volunteered time to the program, according to John.
The program is not intended for domestic cats. Instead, it targets only feral cats. The cost of spaying or neutering each animal is $25. Surgeries will be performed on the third Sunday of every month starting Nov. 22.
All area animal rescue organizations and individuals who oversee feral cat colonies will now have an affordable means of helping reduce the feral cat population, John said.
Feral cats will be altered, feline leukemia tested, AIDS tested, rabies vaccinated then returned to their colonies where they are overseen by qualified individuals and animal groups.
