Ron Largent, a Redding Realtor, formally announced his candidacy for Shasta County assessor at the Sundial Bridge on Thursday, Oct. 15.
Running against incumbent Leslie Morgan, the race could garner more attention than previous elections as property owners watch values continue to decrease and look to the Assessor-Recorder's Office for tax relief, said Kris Vosburgh, executive director of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association.
"Certainly they're taking a more keen interest that the assessor is being judicious and carefully reviewing their case," he said.
Morgan said one of her priorities has been going beyond just putting value on a property but also looking for exemptions.
This year, Morgan's office reassessed 32,000 properties, resulting in a reduced tax bill for 16,400 property owners countywide.
Largent said he wants to bring fair, timely and accurate assessments that are equitable across the county - something he doesn't believe is the case now.
