Silent film fest this weekend

For the fourth year in a row, six classic films made in the era before sound recording on celluloid will be shown during a two-day silent film festival at Old City Hall, 1313 Market St., in Redding.

The weekend event, set for Oct. 23-24, kicks off with a 5:30 p.m. lecture, "Enter the Magical World of Silent Movies," presented by David Shepard, a world-reknowned silent film preservationist and an Emmy Award winner.

There is no charge for the lecture that will take place in the upstairs Performance Hall.

At 7 p.m., the 79-minute classic from 1928 titled "Show People" and starring Marion Davies will be shown in its entirety, preceded by the 20-minute featurette, "Cat, Dog & Company," an Our Gang comedy released to theaters in 1929.

Saturday, Oct. 24, the festival's offerings include:

A 10 a.m. showing of "The Eagle," (1925) starring Rudolph Valentino. The 80-minute feature film will be preceded by the 25-minute featurette "Mighty Like A Moose" (1926) by Charley Chase.

At 12:30 p.m., the 65-minute horror classic "It" from 1927, starring Clara Bow will light up the big screen. "It" will be preceded by Hairbreadth Harry in "Danger Ahead," an 18-minute short released in 1927.

The 2 p.m. matinee feature is the 99-minute German film "Destiny" (1921) starring Fritz Lang.

At 4 p.m., "The Valley of the Giants" (1927) will entertain for 70 minutes, preceded by the 15-minute entertaining short by Lupino Lane titled "Only Me" from 1929.

Finally, at 7 p.m., Charlie Chaplin's first sound movie, "City Lights," released in 1931, will be presented with the original sound track. This 87-minute classic is a treat that the entire family will enjoy.
