Citing a need for better budget priorities in a down economy and the lack of priority funding for the Sheriff's Department, Shasta County resident Chris Young announced his candidacy for the District 5 Board of Supervisors race next June.
Incumbent Les Baugh has also announced his intention so seek re-election to the District 5 supervisorial seat.
"Because Shasta County politicians have not prioritized law enforcement funding, as promised by my opponent four years ago, we now see a revolving door for criminals through the Shasta County jail. County residents have not seen this few Sheriff's Deputies on patrol since the '70s. Our citizens are more at risk today than in decades," Young said.
Shasta County residents have indicated that the law enforcement issue is critical and second only to the current state of the economy, according to Young.
"While much of the county budget is mandated by federal and state directives, we can still control our own destiny in Shasta County to secure our future," he said.
Young says he will bring back the tradition of communication with rural residents that former Supervisor Trish Clarke had maintained for 16 years. He will hold monthly sessions with residents in Shingletown and Cottonwood. He also promises to address problems in the Resource Management Department to help boost economic development and jobs in Shasta County.
"I want to help enact proactive plans to stabilize the county budget, stabilize business and the jobs businesses create, as well as sustain our wonderful environment here," Young stated.
Young, 54, and his wife, Michelle, have been married twenty years, and have four children and two grandchildren.
A native of Crescent City CA, Chris moved to Shasta County in 1973 to attend Shasta College.
He is currently chairing the Redding Planning Commission. A Realtor since 1990, Young is a member of Anderson Rotary Club.
