AUHS campus a buzz with activity

The Anderson Union High School campus was abuzz with activity on Saturday as the girls' cheer squad worked hard to perfect their routines for the opening of football season and homecoming.

Homecoming, set for Sept. 4 with three games - Freshmen at 3:30 p.m., Junior Varsity at 5:30 p.m. and Varsity at 7:30 p.m. - will hold added significance this year as it marks the school's 100th year.

All three football games will be played in the newly refurbished Bob Reid Stadium, named for the school's legendary wrestling and football coach Bob Reid.

A special dedication ceremony honoring Reid will be held between the Junior Varsity and Varsity games, as close to 7 p.m. as league officials will allow.

Hundreds of the Go Blue Cubs faithful will be gathering in Anderson for a full week of Centennial Reunion activities, most of which were spelled out in some detail in last week's editorial.

A special 24-page section included with today's newspaper also contains a complete listing of Centennial Reunion events on page 17, along with locator maps so that those alumni who have not set foot on the campus in recent years can have some chance of finding their way around.

Parking on the hill for football games is notoriously tight on a normal Friday night, but this coming weekend will likely bring the Perfect Storm of parking problems for those who fail to heed signs posted at the bottom of the hill at each entrance to the campus.

When the signs read "Lot Full," simply head over to Lot A at the Shasta District Fair grounds where an abundance of spacious parking will be available at no charge.

A 52-passenger school bus will shuttle fans to and from the Bob Reid Stadium with fairgrounds departures every 30 minutes on the hour and half-hour, said Scott Booth, principal of Anderson Union High School.

Booth and many of his faculty members spent their day off Saturday, Aug. 29, sprucing up the landscaping and re-sodding sections of the performing arts building lawn where students hang out waiting for parents to pick them up after school or after play practice.

Saturday school participants were also busy weeding planter boxes on the quadrangle where students gather for open-air lunches when weather permits or simply to hang out when class schedules allow such freedom.

In the foyer of the school's large gymnasium, two women worked feverishly placing dozens upon dozens of large trophies, sports jerseys, game balls and other athletic paraphernalia in the recently completed glass-fronted oak cabinets that are a gift of the Centennial Reunion committee and all of those alumni who will participate in the All-Class reunion events Sept. 3-5.

Meanwhile, over at the library, nearly a dozen women were fussing with large poster display boards. Some of the historical displays tout the many generations that a particular family has had a student attending classes at Anderson Union High School since it opened in 1909.

Others lovingly assembled a picture board for each decade that the school was in operation: 1900-1910, 1911-1920 and so on. The displays will be up all week and available for the public to view during school hours.
