Indian dancing, drumming on show at Stillwater pow wow

This is an updated version of the article appearing in the Sept. 2 issue of the Anderson Valley Post.

The Redding Rancheria will present the 2009 Stillwater pow wow on Sept. 11-13 at the Shasta District Fairgrounds in Anderson. The Stillwater pow wow is a community gathering to showcase traditional dancing, drumming, food and jewelry in a cultural atmosphere to all families free from alcohol, drugs and smoking. The admission price is $3.

On Friday, Sept. 11, the gates open at 4 p.m. with the grand entry at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the gates open at 10 a.m. with grand entry at 12 and 7 p.m. On Sunday, the gates open at 10 a.m. with the grand entry occurring at 12 p.m.

Each night will begin with a grand entry which includes an entrance by the Hu-Puus Witam, all Native American color guard, and followed by greetings from our local dignitaries. Following the grand entry will be various competitions such as drumming, dancing and an overall competition for Miss, Jr. Miss and Little Miss Stillwater. There will be specialty dancing showcasing Tolowa, California Feather, and the Yurok Dancers.
