A coworker spotted a furry white leg and tail with brown rings dangling under the engine compartment of Robin Fleming's vehicle parked at Kregg Spafford's State Farm Insurance Company at about 2 p.m. Friday. Fleming said she recognized the cat and was "80 percent sure" it hitched a ride from Redding at 8 a.m. when she drove to work.

Stuck deep in the engine compartment, Fleming, passers-by, and three firefighters from the Anderson Fire Protection District reached in for the now-loudly meowing feline. After a few minutes reaching for the cat, AFPD Captain Jason Bellinger helped the cat free from the engine compartment. Bellinger was not bitten, and the cat was not injured or burned.

Fleming said she would post pictures of the cat near her Redding home on Azalea Street.

"I have a cat and I'd hate to think someone would drive off with it on accident and not say anything," Fleming said.

The cat was delivered by AFPD to Anderson Animal Control. For information, 378-6600.
