Chili cook-off at Hawes Ranch to benefit CASA

If you have a great chili recipe, you can make a lifelong difference in the life of a child in Shasta County. Join us on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 2 p.m.-5 p.m. at Hawes Ranch Pumpkin Patch on Dersch Road and bring a batch of your best chili or chili-like dish.

Greg and Lori Hawes will donate a train ride to everyone who buys a ticket on Oct. 3, 2009. Tickets to the chili tasting event are $10, which will include the train ride and the chili tasting. We would encourage you to get your customers out to the event to insure that you become the "Chili Maker of the Year," said event spokeswoman Nadine Bailey.

Last year, more than 3,000 visited the Hawes Ranch Pumpkin Patch on the first weekend of October. Each ticket buyer will be given a wristband that will allow them to taste chili from each of the restaurants participating. They will also be given a ticket to vote for the best chili.

"We will award first through fourth place winners. Each Chili Cook Off winner will receive a trophy and a cash award.

A packet outlining rules of the contest and the amount of chili needed is available upon request. For information, call 530-276-7743 or email nadine.bailey@sbcglobal.net.

Proceeds raised at the event will help to build the foundation for a program that puts trained volunteers with Shasta County Foster Children.

The mission of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Association, together with its state and local members, is to support and promote court-appointed volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children so that they can thrive in safe, permanent homes, Bailey said.
