A 16-year-old Yreka boy, Chris Lopez, was flown to Mercy Medical Center Wednesday afternoon after becoming unresponsive upon finishing a race. According to a nursing supervisor he is in critical condition.
After finishing the three-mile run at a Northern Athletic League meet, Lopez laid down on the football field and was unresponsive. By-standers, parents, coaches, and teammates tried to cool him down.
Emergency crews were called at approximately 5:47 pm and the West Valley Volunteer Fire Department at approximately 5:51 pm, an ambulance was already at the scence and emergency crews were working on him. Both crews worked to revive the Yreka High junior until the helicopter arrived at approximately 6:08 pm to rush Lopez to Mercy.
Temperatures in the area were above 100 degrees for the majority of the afternoon and according to the National Weather Service the high for Cottonwood was 101 degrees.
