Superintendent Bob Lowden touts higher test scores in CUSD schools

The Cottonwood Union Elementary School District received the results of their Academic Performance Index and they are really pleased with how everything turned out.

East Cottonwood Elementary (Kindergarten through 2nd grade) improved over its score from last year, moving up from 833 to 854 for a total of 21 points. North Cottonwood School (3rd - 5th grade) improved from 826 to 843, which is total of 17 points. While West Cottonwood Junior High went down from 822 to 820, they were still over the 800-target marker set by the state.

"I'm very excited out the numbers," said Superintendent Bob Lowden. "With our test scores where they are, we are they 4th highest district in the county."

Lowden said he was especially happy with the results that came from East Cottonwood Elementary.

"Only the second graders test at East Cottonwood, and to see it move up 21 points makes me very proud. It means there is a strong foundation that the teachers are building on every year, with a strong community of parents who are helping them," said Lowden. "I expected some growth, but not this much and it's really encouraging for our district."

According to North Cottonwood School Principal Mark Boyle the growth in the district is especially encouraging because the district has a 50% socioeconomic disadvantage, which doesn't seem to affect their test scores.

"We have a lot of diversity in the area and are very proud of being able to show that we are providing a quality education," said Boyle.
