Electrical short leads to mobile home fire in Cottonwood

A fire under a Cottonwood mobile home on Wednesday led to the complete destruction of the house’s electrical system, said Calvin Ciapponi, battalion chief of Cottonwood Fire Protection District.

As the first responder, Ciapponi said the house was within seconds of being fully involved before he turned the hose on it. Years of walking on the floor put pressure on an electrical line, caught between a joist and the sub-floor. The continual pressure must have eroded the insulation, he said..

On Wednesday at about 4 p.m., the wire shorted out and ignited the flooring.

Beyond the smoke damage to the home at 3124 Green Gate Road, Ciapponi said no personal effects were lost in the fire. Ciapponi added, however, that the expense to repair the electrical system will be about that of a new mobile home. He estimated damages at approximately $100,000.

After Ciapponi extinguished the fire under the home, firefighters from Anderson Fire Protection District arrived enter the house, ensuring there was no fire under the house, he said.

West Valley Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the fire.
