For one day only, the office of the Consulate General of Mexico will open shop in Anderson Sept. 18 to help Mexican Nationals receive their Matricula Consulado, an identification card that allows holders to get medical services in Mexico, according to Sylvia Yzaguirre, community organizer for Shasta County Public Health, in a telephone interview last week.
Last year, the event assisted about 200 people, she said. Aside from the identification card, people may also file for Mexican passports.
The Matricula card does not provide non-citizens access to MediCal or similar government benefits, Yzaguirre noted, saying that the card can be especially useful to people with dual citizenship in Mexico and the U.S.
Additionally, some U.S. law enforcement agencies accept the card as a form of identification, she added.
The consulate will set up office at the Sacred Heart School gymnasium, 3141 St. Stephens Drive, on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The consulate can also provide legal advice, according to consulate spokesperson Andrea López de León Ibarra in a telephone interview on Aug. 23
Matriculas cost $27, and three-year passports cost $74, according to the consulate. To schedule an appointment with the consulate in Anderson, call 1-877-639-4835.
