A 48-year-old Cottonwood man who was going to tend a neighbor's animals was killed Aug. 27 when the pickup he was driving left the roadway and he was ejected, authorities said Sunday.
Robert Rathert was discovered by his son about 2 p.m. Saturday near Sanders Road, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Jeff Ross said.
But the man was last seen at 8 p.m. Friday, so authorities believe the crash may have occurred several hours before his son found his father.
"His son went looking for him" when he didn't return home, Ross said. "He showed signs of being dead for quite some time."
Investigators do not know why the pickup left the road. It is believed that the man was not wearing a seat belt, Ross said.
