Amiee Canavan, 18, and her mother, Renee, of Cottonwood and about 706 women participated in the Women's Silver Salmon Derby held in Valdez, Alaska Aug. 13-18.
According to Renee Canavan, she and her daughter were treated to the fishing trip by Canavan's uncle.
"We participated in the Women's Silver Salmon Derby on Aug 14 and the daily Salmon Derby on Aug. 13, 16, 17 and 18," said Canavan. "On the 17 Aimee caught the largest fish recorded for the day."
The salmon weighed in at 16.76 pounds said Canavan, who added that Aimee won a fleece vest, t-shirt and a one night stay at the local RV park in Valdez for her efforts.
According to the derby's website, more than 400 silver salmon had been weighed for the Valdez Silver Salmon Derby.
The salmon tournament began on July 24 and will continue until Sept. 5, according to the website.
The first place winner in the tournament will receive $15,000, second place receives a cash prize of $5,000 and the third place winner gets $2,000.
