In the Anderson Union High School District (AUHSD) enrollment is up at all three campuses. According to Scott Booth, principal of Anderson Union High School, Big Blue was projecting to kick off the new school year with 698 students, but instead saw 723, an increase of 25 students.
It's the same story at Anderson New Technology and West Valley high schools.
West Valley is expecting to hold steady at 946, which is an increase of 46 students over last year.
New Tech saw their numbers rise by 25 students to 215, said Pat Allison, principal at the high school.
Allison had some theories as to why enrollment within the district may be on the rise. She speculates that because rent is lower in South County, some families may be relocating to save money, especially at a time when unemployment is so high. Another reason Allison gave as to why New Tech has seen a climb in enrollment is because parents and students are school shopping and the high school's small class sizes might be attractive to some parents.
Pacheco Union Elementary School District expected 585 students but 590 showed up the first week. Cottonwood Union School District saw a slight decrease with 1,000 students expected and 993 youngsters actually starting school.
Anderson's Cascade Union Elementary School District has 1,370 students or 30 fewer than officials initially expected.
