Girls Inc. to host film at State Theatre

Girls Inc. of the Northern Sacramento Valley is teaming up with the State Theatre in Red Bluff for a fund-raiser to support programs for young girls and teenagers in both Shasta and Tehama counties.

The theatre will hold a movie night, part of their Tom Hanks film series, and show "A League of their Own."

"We were approached by the State Theatre, who received money from Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson to help with the restoration, they used part of the money to redo the doors. Then decided to donate the second half of the money to five different non-profits to use as a fundraising opportunity," said Emily Westphal, Girls, Inc.

According to Westphal, the Tehama Department of Education had their fund-raiser in January and drew 275 people; they are hoping to duplicate their success. Westphal said they have invited many of the girls from their programs to the movie night as well as softball and little league teams.

"We will have baseball hats and T-shirts, all with Girls Inc. logo on them, we will have give-a-ways with decals and silicone bracelets," said Westphal. She added that they will also have information about their organization and how they help young women with their services.

"(We're) really honored to be given this opportunity with the State Theatre. They are an institution and we are small, but mighty and jumped at this opportunity."

In regards to Hanks and Wilson, Westphal said that it is good to see them giving back to the community, especially since neither was raised here, but they can see the value of donating and what it means to the community.

The theatre will provide the concessions. To purchase tickets in advance or for more information contact Emily Westphal at 527-7767 or by email at girlsincnsv@yahoo.com. Tickets can also be purchased in advance through the State Theatre at www.statetheatreredbluff.com or by calling 529-8727

Tickets can also be purchased at the theatre box office. The movie will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12. Tickets are $6 per person or $4 per person for groups/teams of five or more people.
