WORKING QUICKLY: Emergency crews work amid a light rain to get victims of a wreck on Highway 273 in Anderson to Mercy Medical Center.

Three people were taken to Mercy Medical Center with major injuries Thursday when a silver Dodge Caravan collided with a Black Nissan Sentra at the intersection of Highway 273 and South Street in Anderson at about 4:30 p.m.

Kevin Duncan, 27, of Anderson was in the Sentra along with wife Jade Duncan, his mother Ginny Wright, 3-year-old son Justice Duncan and infant son River Duncan, headed north on Hwy. 273, when Debra McBride, 51, of Cottonwood ran a red light in her Dodge Caravan and collided with the Sentra, witnesses told Anderson Police Officer Dave Price.

According to a press release from the Anderson Police Department, the Caravan was west bound on South St., and McBride either “attempted to cross the intersection or tried to turn right onto Hwy. 273 against a red light.” The Sentra struck the Caravan in the center of the intersection and the force of the collision caused the Sentra to cross the center divide and come to rest in the southbound lane of Hwy. 273.

In the Sentra, both Jade Duncan and Wright suffered major injuries, and Kevin Duncan suffered minor injuries all were taken to the hospital including the two children as a precautionary measure, Anderson Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Howard Fincher said. He added that McBride, driving the Caravan, had likely suffered a broken arm, she was also taken to the hospital.

The accident shut down the northbound lane of Hwy. 273 and cut down southbound traffic to one lane lane for about 45 minutes, according to the press release from APD.
