AT WORK: Concrete workers lay a foundation for a house under construction in the Silvergate subdivision in Anderson.

With each of the six completed houses in the Silvergate subdivision sold, more are under construction in the Anderson subdivision. About 5 to 6 new houses will be under construction over the next few months in the subdivision, according to the development's broker, Vision Real Estate Broker Tracy Bokor.

The city received eleven applications for building permits from the developer in December, 2009, before requirements in the building code took effect.

Concrete workers laying a foundation of a new Silvergate dwelling appreciated the business. Concrete contractor Willie Wilds, of Willie Wilds Concrete, Inc., said the concrete business nose-dived in 2006 and he hasn't seen an upswing yet.

His firm went from five workers down to one, he said, with temporary workers hired as needed.

"It's hard to have five or six employees with nowhere to go," Wilds said.

Additionally, he said the houses market has shifted away from the construction of 2,000-square-feet houses down toward building less than 1,500-square-feet homes — and that reduction uses less concrete, he said.
