Nor-Cal’s boat, sporting show returns to fairgrounds

The 2010 Boat, Sport & RV Show will open at the Shasta District Fair grounds for a full weekend March 5-7. Beyond several displays of boats, RVs, campers and motor homes, one of the main events involves local professional fishermen demonstrating how fish take to lures in a 40-foot-long bass bin that people can view from either side.

The show features several exhibits and shows, and organizer Ron Gilliss said he couldn't identify which exhibit was the most popular to the more than 10,000 people he expects to come through the gate each year.

"Ten different groups of people come to see different things," Gilliss said, adding that fish tackle displays, barbecue and dutch oven cook-offs, and boats and RV displays each draw their own crowd.

Other events include retriever and pointing dog demonstrations, and a taxidermy display of exotic animals. Gilliss added that various vacation destinations, resorts, and guides will also be on hand advertising their services.

A fishing pond stocked with trout will also be available for children to fish, Gilliss said, adding that children get to take home to eat the trout they catch.

New to the sports show this year will be Splash Dogs, a dock-jumping competition for dogs.

Run by husband and wife team Ron and Lynn Gilliss, Nor-Cal Productions has brought the show to the fairgrounds for 24 years.

In the show's first year, Ron Gilliss said the show drew only about 2,500 people.

"The first show had about 40 exhibitors, and it rained," Gilliss said. "It was horrible. I was going to cut it off."

Why not?

"I'm stubborn," Gilliss said, adding that his wife, Lynn, works as his business partner as well. "Five people couldn't do her job."

The show runs March 5-7 at the Shasta District Fair grounds, 1890 Briggs St. on Friday, 12-7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. -7 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. General admission costs $5; children ages 7-15 are admitted for $3; and children under age 7 get in free. Seniors over age 55 get in on Friday for $4.
