Two cluster-type postal boxes in Anderson had their back covers torn-off in the early hours of Feb 16 on Drifstone Drive, Anderson Police Department Captain Robert Kirvin said.
No mail was yet reported missing, and mail items still in the boxes were recirculated through the post office, according to a U.S. Postal Inspection Service spokesperson, who added that the agency should be contacted if any expected mail was found missing.
The boxes that were broken into were older models and may be replaced with high-security postal boxes, according to Anderson Postmaster Sherry Lelevich. One such high-security postal box was vandalized on Treat Lane in Anderson on Feb. 5, Lelevich said, but it was only slightly damaged and not broken into.
Residents using the vandalized postal boxes had their mail redirected until the Driftstone Drive unit can be replaced, according to a post office note on the postal box.
Lelevich reported that postmasters in Shingletown, RedBluff and Corning also found vandalized postal boxes this month.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service requested that anyone noticing suspicious activity at the time and place of vandalized postal boxes contact 1-877-876-2455. .
