The Lady Eagles traveled down to Corning for their final regular season game, and ran into some difficulties with the Lady Cardinals. Overwhelmed in the first half and unable to comeback in the second, West Valley fell 61-43.
The Lady Eagles had problems stopping Corning on defense and getting anything going offensively. Midway through the second quarter, West Valley tied the score; however, Corning stepped up and led 35-24 at the half.
Going into the second half of the game, the Lady Cardinals resumed where they had left off in the first and kept adding to their lead. The Lady Eagles struggled to gain ground both on offense and defense, ultimately losing to Corning.
Megan Bowen scored eight points; Jessica Wilcox and Taylor Trabold scored seven a piece, while Amy Westaby and Ashley Vitellaro both scored six points.
West Valley (9-16) is seeded seventh in the Divison IV playoffs and hosted Mount Shasta, No. 10, on Tuesday at home.
Anderson 53,<B> Yreka 43</B>
After a close first half, the Lady Cubs were able to hold on to the lead third quarter and held it all the way to the end for the win.
Anderson hosted the Lady Miners who kept the pace quick and at times had the Lady Cubs scrambling to catch them. Anderson started to find themselves toward the end of the second quarter.
Coming back from the half, the Lady Cubs started to dominate their opponents, who had a difficult time stopping them. In the end, the Lady Cubs held onto the win.
Anderson (14-12) is seeded fifth in the Division IV playoffs and hosted No. 12 Wheatland on Tuesday.
Boys Basketball
Corning 63,<B> WV 60</B>
The Eagles were able to keep up point-for-point against the Cardinals, but in the end it wasn't enough.
The Eagles played with speed and hit many of their 3-pointers against Corning, however, the Cardinals had size on their side and used it to their advantage snagging rebounds. When West Valley went down in the third quarter, they never panicked; they just kept hitting the basket from the arc, knocking down Corning's lead.
However, once the Eagles got to within a point of the Cardinals, they were never able to over power them for the lead. Corning went on to win, but had to fight West Valley for it.
Tyler Stevenson scored 19 points for the Eagles (15-9) who are seeded No. 5. West Valley played the No. 12 seeded Yreka at home Tuesday in the first round of the Division IV playoffs.
Yreka 50,<B> Anderson 42</B>
The Anderson boys traveled to Yreka to take on the Miners. After some tough play on both sides, Yreak was able to find an edge and hold off the Cubs.
The Cubs played hard on both sides of the ball, but it wasn't enough to hold off the Miners, who were able to come back in the second half for the win.
Anderson (8-18) is seeded No. 11 in the Division IV playoffs and traveled to sixth-seeded Mount Shasta on Tuesday.
