A narrow vacant lot between the Firehouse Lounge and Allen & Dahl Funeral Chapel in downtown Anderson may soon be home to an open-air veterans memorial honoring service members from World War I to Iraq and Afghanistan, if City Councilman James Yarbrough finds some financial backers.

Long vacant, the property is fenced on both ends and "only growing weeds at this time," said Yarbrough, who woke from a deep sleep several weeks ago with the monument idea firmly implanted.

"I started dreaming about it and then woke up. Each time I went back to sleep, the dream became more vivid. I then woke up my wife Janet and said, 'Honey, you've got to hear about this!'" Yarbrough recounted.

With the help of landscape architect Michael Lander of Redding, Yarbrough has developed a double-sided poster board with various details of what he has dubbed a Veterans Walk of Honor. Drawings on the poster board show the monument's various sections as well as an overall view of what the mini-park might look like.

One of the biggest costs - $100,000 - is replacement of a wall at the Firehouse Lounge that is in danger of collapse. Total cost is estimated at nearly $250,000 including benches, lights, paving and trees.
