Local skateboarder enjoys spending time with friends

Alex Collins, 15, decided skateboarding was something he wanted to try a few years back, mostly because many of his friends were into it and he thought it would be a good way to keep out of trouble.

According to Collins, he likes to go swimming in the morning, but reserves his afternoons in the summer to hanging out with his friends at the skate park. He said that he could be found there every day it's sunny.

He and his friends do tricks and talk about a variety of things while they hang out and unwind. Currently Alex can do three flips, backside flips, switch side 180, spins to fakie, full cabs and olley front.

He said he really looks up to skateboarders James Helser, a local boarder, and James Brooks.

As to why he skateboards, Alex said, "It's a good lifestyle. It'll keep you out of trouble and gives you a natural high."

He said he doesn't view skateboarding as a sport, but more of a lifestyle.

I have known Alex for a couple years now and I feel if he wasn't skateboarding he would be really bored and with boredom comes trouble. I'm very proud to have kids like Alex and his friend in my neighborhood they know what respect is!

I agree with ProudGranma0f08, when I'm walking, I sometimes stop and watch those kids at the skate park and my first thought is 'Wow, they are having so much fun!, how Awesome' Then I wish this skate park wasn't so small!(Its a little embarrassing really) The kids are so talented, they challenge each other, they perform for each other, they're video taping, they're creating incredible tricks, they're teaching each other. Then they're fixing these bikes up in such a cool way and comparing their modifications. Then down the street you'll find other groups of kids who can't get into the VERY small skate park who do their own brand of trick riding and who are playing basketball or whatever. It seems to me in the few years I've been here that our Anderson Kids are very good people and I hope they grow up in this community to bring something positive to this area as adults.
