The Cubs have a new varsity baseball coach for the spring 2010 season. Dan Tating is hoping to bring back the baseball program to Anderson Union High School.
According to Tating, who is a teacher at Foothill High School as well as the new coach, the Big Blue had a good baseball program in the 1980s, but then interest in baseball seemed to drop off, and now he along with John Waterman, the varsity assistant coach; James Arnold the junior varsity coach; and Colby Lee the junior varsity assistant coach, are hoping to bring back the baseball program.
"Part of being a coach is putting something in and seeing what you can get out of it," said Tating. "It seems like baseball in the Anderson area has lost interest, (and we are) trying to get the kids into it."
According to Tating there has been a good turn out this season for baseball. In the past there were only about 9-12 players per team, this year there are 16-18 for each team.
Also the junior varsity and varsity teams will be practicing on the same field to build support for each other, said Tating.
"The JV players look up to them and it gives varsity the opportunity to be leaders. Its good because it gives everyone in the program the opportunity to get to know each other."
The goal ultimately is to have the community come out and support the teams and have the teams support the community. Tating has a vision for the baseball program at Anderson and is excited to get started. A few weeks ago, the Cubs held a baseball clinic at Volonte Park with Mark Parent to help kick off the baseball season.
Pitcher Steven Webb, catcher Dalton Gurney, Sean Greene, and Jeff Hotchkiss are just a few of the players Tating said to look out for this season.
