Marcus Zachary, senior at Anderson Union High school, took home the 2010 Northern Section wrestling title on Saturday after his 2-0 overtime win over C.J. Berry of Chico in the 162-pound weight class.
At the Redding Convention Center grapplers from all over the area came to battle it out to see who would win. Zachary was just one of hundreds of wrestlers who tried to win a title. With this win, Zachary has a perfect 44-0 record.
Senior Jerry Bjerklund (127) of Anderson placed fourth and just missed making the state championships falling to Bryon Treece of Lassen. Cub teammate Spencer Larsen (sophomore) took home sixth in the 137-pound weight class falling to Foothill High School's Josh Wydler. Senior Nick Ortis (142) of Anderson also took home sixth place.
Jake Morales (senior) placed fifth in the 147-pound weight class for West Valley. He fell to Foothill's Dallas Poston, which put him in the fifth place match against Jason Powell of Willows. Morales won the match with a 3-2 decision.
Forest Fells (senior) also just missed going to state by placing fourth in the 162-pound weight class for the Eagles. He lost to Jared Stine of Willows in a 6-4 decision. Teammate Austin Lobsinger (sophomore) also placed fourth in the 217-weight bracket.
Everyone who placed in the top three will head to Bakersfield for the CIF State Championships, which begin Friday.
