New Happy Valley weather station to go online April 1

Happy Valley farmers and residents will soon have online access to a new weather station that will replace the 1950 model used at the Clear Creek Community Services District. The district board approved the purchase, not to exceed $1,900, at its Feb. 24 meeting said Char Workman-Flowers, chief executive officer for the district. She expects the system to go online April 1.

The new station is viewed as a water conservation device. If used, farmers will know when the soil is moist, how quickly the soil is drying out, and whether rain may be coming. The information provided can help them decide whether to water their crops, said Kurt Born, the district's interim general manager.

The station will provide real-time updates regarding temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, leaf wetness, soil moisture and evapotranspiration, Born said.

Evapotranspiration is a measure of both moisture evaporating from the soil as well as moisture evaporating from the leaves of plants, a process called transpiration, according to a U.S. Geological Survey Web site.

Additionally, the new station will provide the information automatically whereas the previous station required manual readings, Workman-Flowers said.
