Thespians of New Tech will perform "Our Town" at the Anderson High School Performing Arts building starting tonight, March 11, at 7 p.m. If you miss tonight's opening there will be two more showings one on Friday, March 12, and the last performance Saturday, March 13, both performances begin at 7 p.m.
"It's an American classic, last year we did Shakespeare, and I wanted to do something different from last year," said Steven Main, the drama teacher at Anderson New Tech.
According to Main, the play has a wonderful theme about appreciating life as it comes and to enjoy the small things.
"I've always wanted to do (this play). I have a wonderfully talented group of seniors this year," said Main.
Cathy Alderman will producing the play because Main will be out of town the final week of rehearsals, but said he'd be back to see the final performance on March 13. Kevin Shoemaker, a senior, is the Stage Manager, who narrates the play and provides background information. Ariel Sewart is Emily, who gets the chance to re-live one day of her life. Andrew Carney will play George, the gangly, baseball-loving next-door neighbor of Emily, and a host of other New Tech students join them.
Main said they were fortunate to work with the district and Anderson High School, along with members of the Anderson staff in order to hold the play in the Performing Arts Center at Anderson. Scotty Sewart has done well with costumes, and New Tech has received great support from the parents and staff, said Main.
"The students have made a tremendous effort by practicing everyday after school, they have been very dedicated. I'm very proud of them, we just have tons of talented seniors," said Main.
The entire play from start to finish is only about an hour and a half long. The school would love to see a great turn out in support of their students and are hoping for about 120 people each night. Admission is $5 for everyone.
