Unlocked vehicles looted in Anderson

Residents not locking their vehicles at night are paying for the privilege, a rash of nighttime petty thefts indicates. Residents have reported about 30 vehicle break-ins, all overnight, over the last month in neighborhoods near Stingy Lane and North Street, Anderson Police Sergeant Bryan Van Dyke said in a telephone interview May 25.

While no damage was generally reported, Van Dyke called the thefts “crimes of opportunity.”

Stolen items included cell phones, coins, cash, and occasionally a purse or wallet, he said.

Van Dyke emphasized that residents should “make sure their vehicles are locked and don’t leave anything in plain sight.”

To report a crime or suspicious activity, contact the APD at 378-6600.
