TOUCHDOWN RUN: Anderson Union High School's Trevor Scott ran for two touchdowns against Foothill on Friday, but the Cubs lost the game 44-17. Here, Scott runs down the sideline at about the ten yard line, moments before slamming into a few Cougar defenders, dragging them into the endzone for a touchdown in the third quarter.
The Foothill Cougars forced the Anderson Union High School varsity football team to a 2-2 record on Friday by a score of 44-17. While lopsided, the score did not indicate the closeness of the game through the first three quarters.
Foothill finished the Cubs by recovering two fumbles and completing a few big plays allowed by poor tackling and deep passes by the Cougar offense.
With the score at 24-3 in the second quarter, the Cubs managed some sharp offensive play in a two-minute drill to drive down field and score on a run by Trevor Scott to keep the game within two touchdowns at 24-10.
"(The Cougars) just got a couple big plays on us," said Del Bunselmeier, Cubs assistant coach said after the half.
When asked what adjustments his team made to respond to the Cougar's play, Bunselmeier said the Cubs team was playing well, but that they needed to wrap up the opposing ball carrier better after he scampered for a 40-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
"We just told them to tackle," he added. "(The Cougars) just got a couple big plays on us.
Early in the third quarter, Scott managed yet another touchdown run for about 20 yards. On the play, Scott dragged several defenders into the endzone, with one holding on to Scott for a face mask penalty, to close the Cougar's lead to 24-17.
The Cougars immediately quashed the Cub rally with a 30-yard pass to the left corner of the endzone, which led to a 31-17 lead.
The Cubs offense fumbled away their next possession back to the Cougars. They would not score again.
On the night, the Cubs suffered four fumbles including two fumbled snaps.
"(We) made some mistakes. We can't make turnovers and expect to be a good football team," said head coach Lance Gosch the following day. "I truly believe Foothill is the best team in the section, and we played with them for three quarters."
Gosch credited the play of senior Eddie Brigman, inside linebacker, with nine tackles and senior Donnie Wonder, free safety, with seven tackles. Quarterback Casey Meyer, senior, finished the game with 78 yards rushing and 48 yards passing, Gosch said.
"We're starting to understand what it takes to be a good football team," Gosch said of his players. "It's all about attitude, and I think our kids are starting to buy into that."
The Anderson Cubs will hold its homecoming game this Friday, playing host to Winters Joint Union High School. Gosch said the Winters team features a big offensive and defensive line, a good tailback and likes to play a spread offense.
