Polite society calls for Five Cs of Civilization

Civilization assumes that human beings live in a society that acts toward all people in a way that is helpful and, beneficial to mankind.

Yet, all our lives, we have heard about and observed behaviors that are mean, hostile, and damaging — downright uncivilized. If so, who are the civilized and where are they found? It seems to me there are at least five things that must be part of any civilized society. I call these the five Cs of civilization.

Care, love and regard for fellow members of our society are essential behaviors for a successful civilization and all those we hold dear peaceful living with our fellow humans.

Mercy, charity and helpfulness always need to be given to those we care about. We must care about all humanity to make life better for all.

Courtesy is all important in getting along with other people. Courteous dealings in human endeavors always make things smoother and more pleasant. Good manners are always in season, showing respect, tact and gentleness is necessary in almost all business and domestic affairs.

Concern for others, their feelings, their safety, their well-being and health, truthfulness, accuracy, honor, concern of every kind is an important part in each of the five categories.

I see small improvements in some areas, but I also see hatred distrust, violence, immorality and criminal activity increasing — even among our government leaders — and I wonder where America is headed.
