Kyle Jarrell, 18, credits his opportunity to run cross country with helping him gain confidence and achieve a healthy lifestyle. The Anderson New Technology senior said after he completes a run, he enjoys the feeling of accomplishment.
He added that he learned perseverance from cross country and to focus, because when he runs he tends to think about problems and work through them.
One person who has really inspired Jarrell, is former coach and New Tech teacher, Jeff Carr.
“Mr. Carr really helped me because he was like a father figure,” Jarrell said. “He taught us to believe in ourselves by saying a course was four miles, when it was really eight. He knew we could do it and after when we’d ask him about it, he would tell us how far we ran and how well we did.”
“He made running seem more fun and took the idea of competition and made it more fun,” added Jarrell.
Traveling as a team and the conversations he would have with his coaches and teammates, is what Jarrell will miss most.
After high school Jarrell said he has plans to go to a “good four-year university,” possibly UC Berkeley. He said he wants to major in marketing, and has plans to one day have his own marketing business.
