West Valley downs Anderson 42-34 at Harlan Carter basketball tourney

Both West Valley and Anderson participated in the Harlan Carter Invitational at Enterprise High over the weekend.

The Eagles started the tournament with a loss 56-49 Thursday night to the host Enterprise.

West Valley was tough on defense during the contest and led by as much as nine points before the Hornets figured things out on offense.

Marleigh Ostrom had 15 points, while Aubrey Mendonca added 13 for the Eagles.

Anderson didn’t fair much better against Shasta, losing to the Wolves 40-35 in their opening game.

The Cubs were unable to chase down Shasta, who led and set the tone for the whole game.

Emily English finished with 12 points and Katie Nunnelley had eight points for Anderson.

With both teams moving to the losers side of the bracket, this set up a Friday evening match up between the two rivals.

Anderson and West Valley both came out flat, with both teams struggling on offense. Going into the half, the Cubs led 17-16.

Anderson would go on to add to their lead in the third quarter, but it was West Valley who found a second wind in the fourth.

The Eagles were able to out score the Cubs when it mattered, netting 16 points in the final period.

This was good enough for the lead and a 42-34 victory.

Mendonca finished the game with 16 points and Kendall Vincent added another seven for West Valley.

For Anderson, English put up 11 points and Nunnelley had five.

The Eagles then played Eureka on Saturday in the consolation game on Saturday.

West Valley struggled with their free throws in the second half, making only 5 of 16.

The Loggers were able to build up a lead, which the Eagles couldn’t overcome, losing to Eureka 56-46.

Mendonca finshed the day with 14 points.

Anderson on the other hand was able to shake off Placer in the fourth quarter for a 46-40 win.

Fallon Greenhaw ended her day with 14 points, Rachel Wilson chipped in 10 pointd and English added six.

Anderson heads to the Orland Invitational on Thursday, facing Durham in the opening round before heading to the West Coast Jamboree after Christmas.

West Valley plays this week at the Red Bluff Holiday Classic in their final tournament of the year. They open 2012 by hosting their own West Valley Tournament.
