Tap dance class offerings increase in spring

After hosting a six week tap dancing class through Anderson Park and Recreation, Lori Coker said she is excited to be able to offer more dance classes this spring.

According to Coker, it is difficult for children and parents to find affordable ways to try dance.

“Many of the studios only offer expensive sessions and those go for months. In this tough economy parents may not have the money to do that, so this is a way to give kids a taste of dance, possibly a love of dance,” explained Coker.

Coker said she has danced off and on through the years and is very passionate about sharing her love of dance with others.

Coker and her helper, Daniela Moreira, taught two groups of children between the ages of 3 and 14 to tap dance during a November/December session through Anderson Parks and Recreation.

The two groups then performed at the Holiday Carnival on Dec. 9 and for the residents of Oak River convalescent home the next day.

Coker said she is looking forward to introducing the children to tap, modern and creative dancing. She added that she is hoping to call the group the Anderson Community Dancers and offer classes through out the year.

Coker said she is also working on trying to offer adult tap classes.
