Winter weather can also affect your pets

As winter months begin, pet owners should be especially aware of their pets’ needs because weather changes affect animals as well as people, said Ray John, chief executive officer at Haven Humane Society.

He suggested a few tips that can help make pets safer and more comfortable when the cold, wet season arrives.

“Cats and dogs need protection from the elements, whether it’s a place inside the family home or their own dog house,” John said. “Cats, small dogs and especially short-haired pets are better off indoors when the thermometer begins dropping this time of year.”

He also said that colder nights may cause cats to crawl up under the family car seeking shelter and warmth of the engine.

“That poses a danger to pets when the engine starts,” John said.

He suggested opening or slapping the hood of the family car before starting the engine on cold days to wake up a sleeping animal.

Pet owners need to be aware that the outdoor dog needs a dry, elevated dog house with clean, dry bedding and a flap over the opening to keep drafts out. Some pet owners install pet doors to allow their outdoor animals access to a porch or the garage where a soft cushion in the warmest corner will keep them comfortable on those cooler days and nights.

Pets also may need an increase in food amounts during the colder months as calories boost body heat. On the other hand, indoor dogs and cats may get less exercise which could mean they won’t need as many calories, thus avoiding excessive weight gain.
