Anderson New Tech High
Isabelle Potetenieff
‘She is a very creative soul and won three awards her freshman year at the Shasta County Fair,” said New Tech art teacher, Michelle Boydstun.
Boydstun nominated sophomore Isabelle Podtetenieff, 15, because she always has a positive attitude and an excellent work ethic.
Podtetenieff also recently won the mural contest through Anderson Parks and Recreation to paint a mural at the Anderson River Park.
According to Podtetenieff, her hobbies outside of school include drawing, painting, hanging out with friends and going on explorations in the area around her house.
Her favorite subject is none other than art, because it allows Podtetenieff to express herself in a way she isn’t able to with words.
After high school, Podtetenieff has plans to take a year off from school to find a job before heading to Shasta College. She said she is looking forward to taking classes like public speaking and theater, adding that it would be “really cool” to major in art.
Anderson Union High
James Casteel
Senior James Casteel loves a good book, especially one about philosophy. The 17-year-old claims Ayn Rand is his favorite author because of her view on philosophy.
The Anderson High student said that he isn’t involved in any activities at the high school, but has loaded up on AP and dual credit Shasta College classes offered at the Cub campus. Casteel said his favorite subject is English.
“We just read the Oedipus, which was interesting because you have to decide if it is about fate or your own volition,” stated Casteel. He added that he felt English broadens the scope of high school in a way other subjects can’t.
After high school, Casteel plans on joining the ROTC program for the Air Force. He said he wants to be a pilot and knows only officers are pilots.
“All of my friends are going to ASU (Arizona State University), so I want to go there while I do my ROTC for the Air Force,” said Casteel.
He plans on majoring in English and getting a minor in business.
West Valley High
Cameron Greilich
‘Without a doubt, the best (student) I have ever had,” said Delaine Smith, the Culinary Arts II instructor at West Valley, when nominating senior Cameron Greilich as November’s student of the month.
“He conducts himself in a mature, adult way, makes quality ethical decisions, is more responsible than some adults I know and always puts others ahead of himself.”
According to 17-year-old Greilich, his favorite subjects are Culinary Arts II and SHOP or Students Helping Other People. He said he likes his culinary class because cooking is one of his hobbies and he likes learning how to make different dishes.
His SHOP class is his second favorite subject because he enjoys learning how to communicate and help others, which dove tails nicely with his future major — communications.
After high school, Greilich has plans to attend Simpson University. He said he would like to one day be a youth pastor.
