The Giants Community Fund hosted the seventh annual Junior Giants Willie Mac Awards Luncheon Sunday, Nov. 13, in recognition of the exceptional Junior Giants players and coaches for their positive influence and dedication to their respective communities.
Named in honor of San Francisco Giants Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, the award is the Junior Giants version of the annual title given to a San Francisco Giants player chosen by their teammates.
Every year the honor is presented to the Junior Giants players and coaches who best exemplify the Four Bases of Character Development: confidence, integrity, leadership and teamwork.
In Cottonwood, Jonathon Ahlert was the player chosen and Roger McCoy was the coach for the Junior Giants league.
Willie McCovey, who is also involved in the Giants Community Fund through the Willie McCovey Golf Classic, was in attendance to extend his congratulations to those who went above and beyond to make the 2011 Junior Giants season a success. Also in attendance were Giants Broadcaster Mike Krukow, Public Address Announcer Renel Brooks-Moon, Giants Mascot Lou Seal and a few of the Community Fund Board Members.
The luncheon is an opportunity for the Junior Giants Willie Mac winners to receive the all-star treatment with photo opportunities, peer recognition and acknowledgement, and the ultimate keepsake — their very own personally engraved baseball bat signed by Willie McCovey himself.
From more than 20,000 participants, 43 Junior Giants players were handpicked to receive the honor, while 43 coaches out of over 2,500 were recognized for their exceptional leadership.
