Buy American, hire American, save America

It sometimes appears that Made in America is just an old-fashioned slogan with little impact these days.

Goods bearing the label of Made in China dominate store shelves right here in the good ol’ United States of America.

Hurrah for Diane Sawyer and the ABC television network for persistent coverage of what is going on here in America that isn’t helping the country during this financial crunch situation.

One TV news story I watched recently showed how our own universities were basically helping undermine the American economy by buying foreign-made goods for student dorm décor.

It came out that kickbacks were the culprits for schools going to catalogue companies that import from China. One catalogue didn’t even have any American-made goods.

By the end of the aired segment, several colleges were guilty of this kind of business tainted with the hint of betrayal, whether out of ignorance or greed.

According to the research, once it was pointed out, some colleges began ordering from American companies selling American goods.

Guess what!

The prices were actually lower. So the kickbacks made the difference financially supporting America or China.

Then I heard another story that has been in the local news, of course. The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is being refitted, remodeled or whatever upgrades have been deemed necessary to make it safe during earthquakes, but the work is being done by a Chinese contractor with Chinese workers on the job.

This seems pretty blatant considering our employment situation is so low — so many Americans out of work, bridge workers included.

Whether it is a state or federal contract, it doesn’t’ matter. We are America. We should be supporting America. I even hear that in Washington, D.C., gift shops are full of goods labeled Made in China or Made in Mexico. I can’t believe that in all the places in America there is this kind of domination.

But our values have been changing for some time now, pushed aside for cheap. More and cheaper isn’t so cheap, though.
