It’s been two years since Mark Starr’s soccer team comprised of Redding, Anderson, Cottonwood and Red Bluff girls flew to Klagenfurt, Austria to compete in the United World Games.

That team went undefeated in the two-day event and brought home gold. This time around, Redding lawyer Mike Darlington will coach Team USA and Starr will lend his support.

According to Starr, he was approached by the United World Games about putting together another team from the US; he agreed but said he wouldn’t be coaching it.

Instead Starr approached Darlington, the 2011-2012 Coach of the Year for District 9, who agreed.

According to Darlington, try-outs were held and the top girls from around District 9 were selected.

“The team was formed from kids from D-3 teams, but because of the selection, it’s more like a D-1 team,” said Darlington.

According to Darlington, there are girls on the team from Susanville, Corning, Anderson, Cottonwood, Redding and Red Bluff. He added that at the core of the team are the girls he coaches from Anderson and Cottonwood.

Currently, the team is fundraising and looking for donations from the community to help cover the $60,000 cost of sending the team to Austria.

“We are a third of the way there. We have about $40,000 we still need to raise,” said Darlington.
