A sea of pink chanted “It’s all over,” Friday night, as West Valley ended their season with a 45-36 win over rival Anderson.
Had the Cubs (5-3 NAL, 12-14) won, they would’ve shared a piece of the NAL title with Central Valley and Corning.
During its senior and “Think Pink” night, the Eagles (3-5 NAL, 11-15) made sure they took care of business in the second half.
West Valley senior Casey Duenas was on fire, hitting four 3-pointers, while teammate Hunter Dyche grabbed nine rebounds and put up seven points.
After a strong defensive first half, the score was tied at 17 going into the third quarter, and then remained close until the middle of the quarter.
Anderson pulled away and led West Valley by two going into the fourth.
The Eagles weren’t about to give up.
Duenas started the scoring early with a distant three pointer. Not to be out done, Cubs’ Dominic Allegretto answered back with a 3 of his own.
A few plays later, the West Valley crowd stood and became a deafening roar as Dyche sank a 3, Duenas hit another and Dylon Rosen swatted down an Anderson pass for the turnover, and was then fouled as he nailed a bank shot.
Rosen made his free throws, putting the Eagles up 41-32 with just under three minutes to go.
After going back and forth a few times, Dyche came down with the final rebound as time expired, and the excited student section flooded the court in the sea of pink.
Duenas finished with 21 points for West Valley, while Dyche added 11.
Greenhaw led Anderson with 12 points.
