Motorists warned of deer-breeding time

Deer breeding season means more deer are out and about this time of year, said Capt. Lee Anne Smith, Redding Animal Regulation of Haven Humane Society.

“It’s a problem for motorists because the male deer are in the rut. Right now, they are moving around more than at other times of the year,” she said.

Smith cautioned motorists, especially those driving at night, to be aware of deer jumping into traffic.

“Haven typically receives more calls this time of year to remove deer that have been killed on the highways,” said Smith, who added her animal regulation officers have already addressed a number of calls.

“The rut season typically starts around the first of November, however because the temperatures have been warmer than normal, it seems the breeding season is a bit later,” Capt. Smith said.

To report an injured or killed animal, call Redding Animal Regulation at 241-2550.
