Bowman 4-H kicked off the New Year with their first meeting of 2012. The meeting was held Jan. 3 at Evergreen School. Over thirty people were in attendance.
Club leader Crystal Rulon informed members that donations are needed to construct Fun Night which is being held Feb. 4. The theme this year is “How the West was Fun.” She said they would take anything western and she asked members to please call the county office if you have something that might work. (530-527-3101)
Several people attended meetings in December. On the 16th, the Outdoor Activities group learned how to make fire out of all sorts of things. Leader’s Council was held the week of Christmas. They had a pot luck and played games.
Horse Project will have their first meeting on Jan. 21. They will be learning about horse safety and equine first-aid.
There are lots of other activities coming up, too. Justin Smoak, club treasurer, spoke about Favorite Foods Day/Life Skills Judging Day which will also be taking place on Jan. 21. You can prepare a dish, or organize a table setting or serve food. It doesn’t matter what kind of thing you want to do, it’s all fun, he said.
As mentioned before, 4-H Fun Night is coming up on Feb. 4. Bowman 4-H club president, Shannel Delaloza, reminded members that they can make a poster for Fun Night, but members need to have their posters in by Jan. 6. Also, Shannel asked that each family bring a cake for the cake wheel game. However, no cakes with cream fillings, please, and no refrigerated cakes.
This year, Bowman 4-H will have two booths, said Club Leader Vicky Woolley. A spaghetti dinner will be served. Volunteers are needed to either work a booth or help serve dinners. This is a good way for members to get in some community service hours.
Also coming up later this year will be Camp Tehama. Bowman 4-H member Jackie Asturias spoke about joining the teen leadership group which includes youth directors. Crystal Rulon announced they are looking to fill nine positions. The first interviews are at the end of January. Camp is usually held in July. Go to the 4-H web site or look at the 4-H Green Sheet for more information.
This month’s question for 4-H members was: “What’s the most important thing you’ve learned while participating in 4-H?” Shannel Delaloza said, “That winning is not everything, and that you’re not truly happy unless the people you love win, too.” Shannel recently won a trophy for giving five presentations, so she’s familiar with what it’s like to win. Good job, Shannel!
Our next 4-H meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Hope to see everyone there!
